All Wool Clothing Is Not Created Equal
When you wake up in the morning and start your day one of the first decisions you make is what to wear (unless you are the type who lays out their outfit the night before). There are always many things to take into consideration, the weather, what you will be doing during the day and the desired level of comfort.
When it’s cold and blustery outside, a peek through the window has you longing to jump back under the covers and stay home all day, but since you can’t, you’re only option is to dress in such a way that you will feel warm and cozy all day long. Wool clothing is an excellent choice in these situations.
Wool clothing is also great for when you want to have a more businesslike appearance. Much of the wool clothing you can buy comes in the form of slacks, suits and sweaters, making them perfect for wearing to work or other less casual occasions. However, wool can also be very comfortable to wear, so it’s a good option for a more leisurely wear, too.
Although wool is very versatile, this is partly due to the fact that there are many different types of wool. This causes a very wide variation in roughness and comfort and also in price. You may purchase a pair of wool slacks for a fraction of the price you pay for a cashmere sweater. They are both wool, but the type of wool and whether it is rough or soft wool makes all the difference.
For outerwear, such as coats and jackets, a rougher type of wool is used. This kind of wool is less expensive because it is coarser. It is used only in clothing that will not come into much direct contact with the skin because it can be very itchy.
Wool clothing is always made of a finer type of wool, but there is still great variation in the fineness of the wool. Some wool items can still be rather itchy, and often pure wool is not used, but rather a mixture of wool and another material. However, the finer merino wool and cashmere are very soft and are considered extremely comfortable to wear. This is one reason why they are much more expensive.
While soft wool such as cashmere is considered something of a luxury, all types of wool are appreciated for their warmth and breathability. This type of material has been used for centuries and is still an important material in clothing. As synthetic materials have become more prevalent, wool clothing has become less popular, however, blending wool and using finer, soft wools makes this material a popular choice today.
